BEVO'S SATURDAY - 8 JULY 1995

Bevo is a 13 1/2 month old male Schipperke dog living in Oregon.

I took Bevo to the Ranch last Saturday like I do almost every weekend. I work on things that need working on and Bevo runs free and does dog things.

We had been there five hours and I was mowing the lawn when I noticed Bevo heading down the main road. Just before going out of sight he turned around and looked at me for 3 or 4 seconds. I didn't think much about it because the barn was down that way and he some times went down there to sniff around.

About 20 minutes later the neighbor boy drove up on his trail bike and said that someone had Bevo down at the main gate. I hiked the 1/2 mile to the main gate and there was Beth Morin, a total stranger, and Bevo was in her car. Beth told me that Bevo had left the Ranch and was wandering back and forth across the interstate highway and

had nearly been hit several times.

We let Bevo out of Beth's car and he started to leave again, I called him back. He started down the road the other way, again I called him back. Finally he took off at a run toward the interstate, Beth got in her car and went after him and I kept calling him; then he turned around and came to me. I managed to coax him up to the house and tie him.

Bevo has an appointment Tuesday which will render him an it which hopefully will settle him down. If Beth had not been driving by, Bevo would no longer be with us. Thanks for caring Beth!

Update - September 1995: Since that story was published, Bevo has been "adjusted" and has really settled down. He no longer exhibits the tendency to wander. I still let him run loose at the Ranch but I keep a close eye on him.

Final update - December 1997: After I had him neutered two years ago, Bevo seldom wandered more than 50 feet from me. He got so good at keeping an eye on me that I got to where I didn't worry about him and he just ran free when ever we visited the Ranch. Even when he and Beng (the new Labrador stray that I have been feeding) were playing and Beng would leave the area, Bevo would come back to where I was. On July 20, 1997 around 9:00PM, for reasons only known by him, Bevo left the property and wandered onto the freeway. He probably never knew what hit him. I really miss you Bevo ...... goodby my little friend.

Another Bevo?
